Most Dangerous Areas in the UK
Crime rates in the UK have skyrocketed in recent years. Last year the government estimated that at least 8.7 million crime incidents were reported within England and Wales.
Due to the increase in crime, residents living in the UK do feel unsafe and vulnerable, especially in locations where felony occurs often. But what are the most dangerous in the UK? We’ll be discussing this and more, such as which UK places you should consider being more cautious in.
Why Have Crime Rates Increased?
There is no conclusion as to why crime has risen, although factors can point to drugs and alcohol, social media, weekend brawls, and even football hooliganism.
With the use and size of the internet, criminals are able to lay their hands on anything they want, resulting in a surge of young adults getting involved in dangerous activities.
Furthermore, community support officer roles have been cut, with 3 out of 5 positions being completely wiped, meaning people don’t have this valuable service on hand. This causes a lot more troubled people with difficult lives to turn to crime.
Most Dangerous Places To Live In The UK
Although crime transpires all across the UK, studies highlight that densely populated cities are the most frequent crime areas. The five most dangerous places for crime within Great Britain are:
London Crime
Unsurprisingly, the UK’s captivating capital is a hotspot for crime, and its current crime rate is 32% worse than the rest of the country. According to Crimerate, London had an overall crime rate of 105 crimes committed per 1,000 people.
Some of London’s most common crimes are:
- Violence and sexual offences – which currently has a crime count of 264,171 crimes committed.
- Anti-social behaviour crimes – which currently has a crime count of 222,824 crimes committed.
- Vehicle crime – which currently has a crime count of 103,410 crimes committed.
Sheffield Crime
Sheffield, the industrial city, is currently considered the most dangerous city in the South of Yorkshire. It has been included on many crime lists for violence, damage, and theft offences.
According to Crimerate, last year Sheffield had an overall crime rate of 106 crimes and an overall crime count of 54,845 crimes committed. Some of the most popular crimes committed were anti-social behaviour, burglaries, arson, possession of weapons, and bicycle theft.
Liverpool Crime
Liverpool is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the UK, but when figures are as high as Liverpool’s are for antisocial behaviour, it should serve as a warning sign.
According to crimerate, Liverpool had over 6,124 violent crimes committed last year. Liverpool is currently the third most dangerous in England and Wales. Last year alone, Liverpool had an overall crime rate of 135 crimes committed per 1,000 people.
Birmingham Crime Rate
Shockingly, Birmingham is considered as the second of the most dangerous places in Great Britain. Last year alone, Birmingham’s overall crime rate was 137 crimes committed per 1,000 people.
Some of the most popular crimes committed are:
- Vehicle crimes – which were reported 13,686 times.
- Public order crimes – which were reported 10,989 times.
- Violence and sexual offences – which were reported 63,960 times.
- Crime damage and arson crimes – which were reported 10,868 times.
Manchester Crime
From fraud to vandalism, the Greater Manchester area is struggling when it comes to crime, with a whooping crime count of 27,6011 crimes committed.
Some of the most popular crimes are:
- Violence crimes – which were reported at least 99,217 times.
- Drug offences crimes – which were reported 8,714 times.
- Criminal damage crimes – which were reported 29,276 times.
- Robbery crimes – which were reported 4,388.
Violent and anti-social behaviour incidents are a leading cause of crimes within Manchester. These crimes are likely so high due to the large number of bars and clubs located in the city centre.
