Punting

What is more English than punting? Not a lot, that is for sure, for those visiting the UK for the first time, taking a punt in the river Cherwell in Oxford can be an incredibly serene activity. Gently bobbing along the water, taking in the views of the city around you is a truly mesmerising experience.

Book lover’s paradise

For the book lover’s amongst us, Oxford will surely already be on your list of places to visit, with the legendary Norrington room housing over 160,000 books on more than 3 miles of shelving, you would struggle to find a book they don’t have. On top of this, the history on display with Blackwell’s being established in the late 1800’s has to be admired. A true history and bibliophiles combo that isn’t to be missed.

Architecture

Being such a historic town, it is only natural that it features some absolutely stunning architecture. From some of the university buildings to St George’s Tower, anyone who is into history or simply admiring and admirable job well done will surely find their place here in Oxford.

Incredible museums

Oxford has no shortage of museums for those wanting to learn a bit more about the city with their time here. From the ever changing big name art exhibitions of the Ashmolean museum to the archaeological spectacles provided by the Pitt River museum, ask anyone in Oxford for a recommendation on what to do in the city and they will all talk about the museums.

The Oxford University Parks

The Oxford University parks are locally described as the “green oasis” of Oxford, a place where nature and people can meet. Originally planned as a space for sports and recreational purposes, this park is now an open area available to the public all year round except for Christmas eve. For the sports lover’s amongst us, you may be able to catch a game of football, lacrosse, tennis, rugby or cricket.

Modern Art Oxford

Whilst currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Modern Art Oxford is an incredible display of some of the most prestigious artistic talents of the modern world. They also have a shop where you can buy different souvenirs and pieces of art to show off your cultural interests.

Oldest pubs

Oxford is home to some incredibly old pubs, with their oldest being the King’s Arms pub that was built way back in 1607 and still standing. Not only is this a well looked after site of historic significance, but they also claim to be the “brainiest pub in Oxford” with the “highest IQ per square foot of anywhere in the world!” no doubt due to Oxford scholars relaxing here on the weekends.

As we have established, Oxford has a very rich history, this also extends to it’s history of music, with the city producing countless musicians and bands. Going to a concert in Oxford can be like going back in time, especially when enjoying the esoteric tones of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.

Covered Market

The covered market is a significant part of the Oxford experience, this market provides many people the opportunity to buy fresh food and other produce. The building dates all the way back to the 1770’s with a long and varied heritage. It is said to provide a unique showcase of some of the highest quality local crafts, food, drink, and other items.
