The county of Norfolk, located in East England, contains a number of large towns, such as Norwich, Downham Market, and Great Yarmouth, and urban areas as well as stunning countryside spanning over 5000 square miles.

What Is The Crime Rate In Norfolk?

The overall crime rate in Norfolk is around 70 crimes per 1000 people. The region’s violent crime rate sits at around 40.9 crimes reported per year per 1000 people, making it higher than the national crime rate. As well as higher violent crime rates, Norfolk has an ‘other crime’ rate that is 50% higher than the national average and a public order crime rate that is also significantly larger. There is some good news, however, as possession of drugs and weapons crime levels, as well as shoplifting, burglary, and anti-social behaviour, are all below the national average.

How Safe Is Norfolk?

As well as having high violent and other crime rates, it is important to note that over the past year, the number of crimes in these areas has significantly increased by 24.5% and 20.4%, respectively. The fastest growing crime in the area is public order offences, which increased by over 32% in the last 12 months. Violent crime makes up around 43% of all crime in the area, meaning that Norfolk residents are less safe than those in other regions. The next most common crimes in Norfolk are Anti-social behaviour (15.1%) and public order offences (10.4%).

Crime In Norwich

Norwich is ranked as the most dangerous city in Norfolk and is within the top 20 most dangerous areas out of all the 546 villages, towns and cities in the region. Crime statistics from the last year show that it has 96 crimes per 1000 people, meaning that one in ten people in the area are likely to be a victim of crime – this is higher than the Norfolk and national average. Norwich has also been identified as one of the top 20 most dangerous cities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

According to Police.uk, there were a total of 4,123 crimes in the last 12 months in Norwich North, Norwich East, Norwich South and Norwich West. The most common types of crime in the area are listed as violence and sexual offences, anti-social behaviour, public order, criminal damage and arson and shoplifting.

Crime In Downham Market

Downham Market is ranked in the top 10 most dangerous towns in Norfolk and ranks 115th in the most dangerous areas out of all the 546 villages, towns, and cities in the region. Crime statistics from the last year show that it has 57 crimes per 1000 people, meaning that one in twenty people in the area are likely to be a victim of crime – this is lower than the Norfolk and national average.

According to Police.uk, there were a total of 858 crimes in the last 12 months in Downham Market. The most common types of crime in the area are listed as violence and sexual offences, anti-social behaviour, public order, criminal damage, and arson. As Downham Market is a smaller town, there is no further breakdown by area of the crime rates. It is, however, important to note that Downham Market is safer than the nearby towns of Costessey, Taverham, Bradwell, and Attleborough. It is, on the other hand, more dangerous than Cromer, Watton, Wymondham, and Fakenham.

Crime In Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth is ranked as the most dangerous medium-sized town in Norfolk and is within the top 10 most dangerous areas out of all the 546 villages, towns and cities in the region. Crime statistics from 2022 show that it has 163 crimes per 1000 people, meaning that over one in ten people in the area are likely to be a victim of crime – which is again higher than the Norfolk and national average. Great Yarmouth has also been identified as one of the top 5 most dangerous medium-sized towns in all of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

According to Police.uk, there were a total of 6,029 crimes in the last 12 months in North Yarmouth and South Yarmouth. The most common types of crime in the area are listed as violence and sexual offences, anti-social behaviour, public order and criminal damage and arson.
