Showcasing Sheffield: Facts About The Steel City

What is Sheffield known for?

Sheffield, recognised for its industrial past and culture scene, is the fourth-largest city in the UK. The district is home to the world’s first football club, Sheffield FC, which was founded in 1857 by Nathaniel Creswick. Additionally, the Sandygate Road pitch is also considered to be the oldest football ground by the Guinness Book of Records.

During the Industrial Revolution, Sheffield’s population surged. Sheffield is often nicknamed The Steel City on account of its reputation for steel production; innovations that developed in Sheffield included stainless steel and crucible; this is where the famous theatre gets its name from. Many of the structures that were once factories and foundries now contain a plethora of galleries, theatres and museums, another reason why Sheffield is a popular place amongst tourists.

Sheffield’s History

Throughout the middle of the nineteenth century, Sheffield was and still is one of the most foremost steel manufacturers. A man by the name of Thomas Boulsover discovered the process of fusing copper and silver together, producing something that resembled silver but was much cheaper to manufacture. From this, a product called the ‘Sheffield Plate’ was created. This invention was used to make items such as buckles and snuff boxes. The development of this product helped the city’s industry to grow. Despite many of the steel firms being shut down after the second World War, Sheffield still produces more steel than ever.

Not only is Sheffield known for its steel success, but other industries that have too developed in Sheffield. For instance, George Bassett opened the Trebor Bassett sweet factory and has grown to become a market leader in sweet treats. Furthermore, the manufacturing of cutlery began in the middle ages and led to the foundation of the Cutlers Company of Hallamshire in 1624.

Marvellously, Sheffield’s reputation as an education centre has been enhanced by the creation of the Sheffield Hallam University. Students that study here have sustained a new generation of lively nightlife and uninhibited entertainment venues.

How many people live in Sheffield?

Immensely, Sheffield’s population has expanded by a miraculous 24,632 since 2015, representing a 0.69% annual change. Now, there are an estimated 730,158 people who have resided in the area. Reasons for this rapid increase could be because citizens describe Sheffield as a vibrant city with something for everyone; the Peak District is right on its doorstep and around 7% of the city’s population are employed within the creative industry, meaning there’s plenty to get involved in.

Is Sheffield a safe city?

Every rose has its thorn, and sadly, Sheffield’s crime rate is far from perfect. The busting borough has witnessed an intense escalation in criminal activity; a 27% rise. Studies highlight that almost 100 incidents are committed per 1000 people and over 47,500 felonies were reported to South Yorkshire Police between August 2019 and August 2020.

Dejectedly, police tape has become a frequent sight in Sheffield. In recent months, there has been a series of shootings and attacks in the Sharrow and Abbeydale areas of Sheffield, which police believe are targeted attacks by hostile gangs. Officers are now interacting with residents in attempt to safeguard the suburbs. This comes weeks after the desolate death of a woman who was tragically tormented by 60-year-old David Bestwick. The woman was found with critical injuries and was taken to hospital to receive treatment but later died.
